Pakistani Supreme Court strikes again. This time, not against the executive, but against the Omnipotent Pakistani Military. The landmark judgement came out when it was accused that, nexus ,exist between Pakistani judiciary and military, against the executive. Chief Justice Iftikar Muhammad Chowdary has again displayed audacity, since his reinstatement in 2009. The case dates back to 1990, when ISI, with a group of politicians, tried to rig Parliamentary elections of Pakistan. The Supreme Court found the Generals guilty, questioned the military’s political role and even called for abolition of ISI’s political cell. The implementation of the verdict is doubted, since it has happened in a country where military is ‘above the law’. But even then, the step is bold. ISI, being accused for political instability (at least in one case and for the first time), is a sign of attainment of maturity by Pakistani public institutions. Many times, the original design of liberal democracy of Pakistan had been failed by its own military. The plans are chalked out by the perverted ISI. The hard reality is that, the terror cells trained and groomed by ISI are out of control. Thus ISI is now identified as the problem, and not ,as the solution. The historic verdict, though its execution is uncertain, is a first time deterrent against the all mighty military. At least there is one Iftikar Chowdary who could be relied upon, at least there is one functioning institution in a failed state. It is the oasis of the desert. Once the military’s role in civilian politics is reduced, countries like India can deepen its engagement with the democratically elected Govt. of Pakistan. The current engagements largely depend on the moods of Pakistani military generals. India always aspires for a stable Pakistan, which could be a partner as well as a friend in South Asia. Peaceful relations between India and Pakistan are essential for the prosperity of the region. It was the military and ISI of Pakistan which masterminded the Kargil attacks, attack over the Parliament of India, the Mumbai attacks and the latest in the list , the cyber warfare to destabilize north east region of India. They had always tried to increase tensions, when ever the relations attained normalcy. The hidden agenda of ISI foils the peace moves. Thus a check over ISI’s and military’s role, even if very small, will bring enthusiasm for strategic analysts. It is a long cherished ‘dream come true’ for India.
